Want to learn more about Oklahoma's efforts to prevent child sexual abuse?

This recorded workshop below highlights our organizations (OU Health Campus, YMCA, Praesidium, The CARE Center, and Bethesda) collaborating on the Partnering for Prevention: Rural Oklahoma Schools Initiative.

Programs Involved

  • CARE Center's Roar Program

    • The CARE Center is Oklahoma County’s only child advocacy center. ROAR is The CARE Center's education program that teaches an engaging lesson on body safety and empowerment for children in PreK-2nd grades. The interactive and easy to implement lesson is free and designed to be taught in a classroom or group setting. A lion named Rex and his animal friends take children on a journey to find his ROAR, a simple and memorable acronym that teaches children that their bodies are their own and empowers children to stand up against abuse. Take home materials, reinforce learning and continue the Rules of ROARing conversation at home.

  • Bethesda's Stop Go Tell program

    • Bethesda, Inc. remains the only center in Oklahoma dedicated exclusively to the treatment, education, and prevention of child sexual abuse. Bethesda’s Stop, Go and Tell is a fun, age-appropriate and interactive way to teach children about personal space boundary rules and what to do if someone tries to break those rules. Bethesda's licensed therapists created this 30 minute presentation in 2004. Since then, Stop, Go and Tell has been presented to tens of thousands of students in Oklahoma.  The words “Sexual Abuse” are not used in the children’s presentation.

  • Praesidium Assessment Tool

    • Praesidium’s mission is to prevent the sexual abuse of children and vulnerable adults and to preserve trust in respected organizations. The Praesidium Assessment Tool is an online self-assessment tool that provides the expertise and technology necessary for organizations to measure objectively how and to what extent sexual abuse prevention best practice standards are correctly infused and adopted. The completed self-assessment provides organizations with a blueprint and sample resources to address any potential abuse prevention gaps. For more information on Praesidium, click here.

  • Know See Respond, YMCA

    • As part of the YMCA’s Five Days of Action, YMCAs and youth-serving organizations across the country take part in raising awareness and empowering our community to help prevent child sexual abuse. This national campaign is built on three simple, powerful habits: Know. See. Respond. By providing our families and community with information to prevent, identify, and respond to child abuse, we can better protect the children of our community.

Child Sexual Abuse Resources for Schools

  • Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse in Schools: Toolkit of Recommendations & Resources to Address Needs

    • Schools are ideal locations to address the prevention of child sexual abuse (CSA), considering the time, oversight, and guidance school personnel provide to children. In 2022, the Oklahoma Child Sexual Abuse Workgroup conducted 64 surveys and 23 focus groups/interviews with school administrators, teachers, counselors, paraprofessionals, and others to better understand their perspectives on prevention efforts in their schools. Based on those findings, this toolkit was developed to outline current needs and recommendations and provide resources for preventing CSA in schools. The action steps outlined are interrelated and often overlap, allowing them to be implemented in tandem.

  • Oklahoma Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Directory

    • Childhood sexual abuse is a significant public health problem, with deleterious emotional, social, behavioral, and mental health outcomes for victims. The Oklahoma Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Workgroup was established to examine the efforts and gaps in addressing the prevention of child sexual abuse in Oklahoma. The Workgroup is composed of members from state and nonprofit agencies who has programs focused on child sexual abuse prevention, childhood problematic sexual behavior, sex education, and/or healthy relationships for youth. One of the initial efforts of the workgroup was to develop and distribute a survey to inventory and assess the gaps of child abuse prevention education and healthy relationship building services in Oklahoma. This directory of prevention services provides information about child sexual abuse programs in Oklahoma.
